week 26! one more week and I’ll be entering the 3rd trimester. the “what to expect” app claims that my uterus is the size of a soccer ball, which I find hard to believe. yet if the baby is the size of this head of lettuce than the uterus must be a tad larger in order to house him, right?

mama update

a bit of cold has side lined me this week, disrupting my sleep and respiratory system. speaking of sleep disruption, on Tuesday night I was kept awake with the feeling that my uterus was growing overnight. it may have been braxton hicks contractions because my tummy kept tightening up like a drum—it was a painless but very odd sensation. the next morning I felt like my bump had torpedoed out which prompted a trip to the local mall to invest in some maternity jeans. I found some great lounge pants at the gap maternity and a few pairs of jeans at h&m.

for valentine’s day, joe and I made some delicious homemade pizza and he brought me some beautiful pink potted tulips that like me, are just beginning to bloom.

as the due date creeps closer I am becoming more and more eager to meet our little man. joe feels the same way. I’ve been playing him music each night under the covers—best to start developing his musical tast early. so far he’s heard explosions in the sky, radiohead, the cure, and seu jorge. no baby tunes for him, although it may be time to expose him to some bach and mozart.

tomorrow, I head south to Florida to visit with my family and dear friends and attend my very own baby shower! my mother and sister-in-law are both flying in as well and I am very excited to show them around my hometown. I’ll try and post week 27 from the sunshine state.

Great musical selections so far. Can’t wait to celebrate you and the boy later this week!

and here we are at week 13! time is flying! only one week left until we enter the 2nd trimester! get ready to break out the…sparkling water. I cannot believe the babe has grown an inch in a week. if only my hair would do that.

at any rate, we had some exciting developments last week! we went in for our 1st trimester screening and got to see the wee one on an incredible 4d ultrasound machine. 4d you ask? we were wondering too. here’s the definition: A 4D Ultrasound (or 4D Live Motion Imaging) is the continuous three-dimensional scanning of the baby with a simultaneous visualization of the A, B, and C planes. pretty fucking cool.

we got to hear the little pitter patter, or rather the very quick pitter patter. 161 beats per minute. quite the little ticker. the most incredible thing though was seeing the babe wiggling around in there. it was dancing like the gopher in Caddyshack! she/he got definitely got that move from Joe. so freaking wild.

as far as body developments go, I’m pleased to announce that I’m finally starting to show! just a bit but I’m really pumped! oddly enough, my doctor told me to up my calorie intake as I had lost two lbs since my last visit. this little dude is like a tape worm! I’m loving milk, bananas, peanut butter, avocados, tea, orange juice, and scrambled eggs. still no morning sickness to report. however, I went running yesterday and after a mile my hip joints started to get super achy, which apparently can be blamed on edema. edema is the swelling of joints caused by low blood circulation due to the growing uterus putting pressure on blood vessels. yikes. or maybe I’m just getting old.

That’s the sort of pregnancy diet I could get behind :)!

The food at Chung King in San Gabriel rivals that of any Sichuan restaurant in Queens: lazi ji, eggplant, pork chops with garlic, and dandan mian were all delicious. The real star, though, was a Sichuanified take on cumin lamb. Fantastic!

Jon made yellowtail ceviche. I made a Thai cabbage salad. Sundays at the Hollywood farmers market are my favorite part of living in LA. Fish is from Santa Cruz Island, with avocado, garden tomatoes, shallots, and coconut milk. Salad’s got two types of cabbage, carrot, almonds, crispy shallots and garlic, and a vinaigrette full of fish sauce and chilies.
